Ahoy!

Just tried this one for fun BUT I tried a real butter cream frosting, not one that was just shortening. I did not have the same consistency at all and was hard to work with. So, I will stick to the old recipe for decorating and then use this one on a cake that is more for taste than for looks!

Level One Done!

Okay, I finished level one and got my little certificate.. Keep in mind there are three levels and then fondont and gum paste. So there is still lots to learn. Last night we did roses. I am not a fan of roses on cakes but it was fun to learn how to do them. The people in class are amazing and talented. I feel like the wanna be in there but we all laugh and have fun. There were 13 people in the first class and by last night there were only 5 including me.

Another practice...

My Nephews are turning 14 and I had a hard time being creative with a cake for guys. So, a free hand cake had to do. Lesson learned: space out letters/design BEFORE starting :)

Cake from class II

Let me start by saying that last night I had dreams about cakes...kind of nightmares really. I had to keep frosting my cakes. Uhhhhh.....

So we really have homework to even get to the part where we decorate. You have to make and level and "torte" the cake first. Mine was a mess. I decided to do a chocolate cake and white frosting. Not smart. I warned my sister that it may not work for Nikki.  Every crumb that lifted as I frosted showed. I decided I would call this "the oreo cookie effect" Then I felt much better.

At class we had to pick a design, I chose the flower. There are so many "stars" on this cake that my hand is cramped. Really. But I like this and I think it turned out well enough for Nikki. So, here it is. I know far from perfect but I had so much fun. I just love this and the class is fun too!

Sad cake~

I started to practice the stars. I used the wrong frosting so it was way too thick. Now I know I cant cheat the frosting. I debated sharing this picture, it is sad in so many ways. The heart is crooked and off center. I asked Ryan what he thought of it and he said "It will do" Nice.

At least it is level...and CHOCOLATE!

We will have fun eating, I mean "erasing" the mistakes.

Class One~

Okay, so I had my first class. The teacher was very unorganized. She spent two hours demonstrating for us how to make three consistencies of frosting (Made with...gasp...shortening!) So that's how they get the frosting to stay put!

We learned how to seal in a filling so it doesn't seep out the sides, how to level a cake, how to assemble the "tools and tips" and then we watched her do a cake. Not a very good looking cake. After, she took us all out to the store to buy our supplies.

Next weeks list of what we need: bring in a frosted cake ready to decorate. I decided to try what I had today at home. I did not use the Wilton frosting, I cheated, but I was eager to try out my stuff. This is what I learned today in the process:
I was missing parts that I need
That it is not easy to level the darn cake, even with the tool
That is is MESSY
That I have LOTS to learn
Here are the pathetic pics...
